Internship Overview:
The Paris Agreement of 2015 marks a significant achievement in global climate policy. The 'Climate Sector Project (CSP)' plays a vital role in its formulation and execution on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), offering both conceptual and practical insights. The primary aim is to enhance the integration of transformative strategies for low-emission and climate-resilient development within German and international development cooperation.
This internship focuses on the area of 'Mitigation.' Key responsibilities in this domain include providing support and technical guidance to the BMZ regarding international climate policy, climate negotiations, climate initiatives, and participation in global forums such as the G7 and G20. Furthermore, the CSP assists the BMZ in its routine climate policy activities, which encompass emissions data analysis, national climate contributions (NDCs), ambition enhancement, Just Transition, feminist climate policy, decarbonization of the energy sector, and both voluntary and mandatory carbon markets. In this context, the CSP is responsible for preparing factsheets, speech drafts, and position papers while aiding in the organization of events.
As an intern at the Climate Sector Project, you will gain valuable insights into the team's daily operations. Under the mentorship of experienced team members, your main tasks will revolve around climate protection initiatives. Your specific duties will include:
- Conducting research on climate policy issues and preparing briefings, evaluations, talking points, speech drafts, and strategic documents.
- Assisting in the evaluation of project proposals related to greenhouse gas emissions reduction needs and options, as well as the activities of multilateral development banks in climate protection.
- Contributing to the development of publications and informational materials regarding Germany's role in international climate policy and development cooperation, which may involve preparing background information, speeches, and supporting event organization.
- Providing ad hoc assistance on current project tasks for the BMZ.
- Offering organizational support, including pre- and post-workshop preparations, meeting coordination, webinars, presentation creation, participation, and minute-taking in both internal and external meetings and events, as well as aiding in knowledge management.
Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify for this internship, candidates must be currently enrolled in at least the 3rd semester (preferably in a Master's program) in a relevant field related to climate change, climate policy, and/or development cooperation. A solid foundational knowledge in climate change and international climate policy is essential, with familiarity in areas such as greenhouse gas emissions reduction, NDC development and implementation, national and international carbon markets, multilateral development banks' activities in climate change, feminist development policy, and/or international climate negotiations being advantageous. Experience in development cooperation, exposure to developing countries, and knowledge of German development cooperation are also beneficial. Practical experience through related internships or part-time jobs is required. Strong analytical abilities, a structured work approach, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the capacity to present relevant information succinctly are crucial. Candidates should demonstrate initiative, the ability to work independently even under pressure, proficiency in both German and English, and familiarity with MS Office applications (especially Excel). Proficiency in additional languages such as French and Spanish is a plus.
