Internship Overview:
The Paris Agreement of 2015 marks a significant achievement in global climate governance. The 'Climate Sector Project (CSP)' plays a vital role in shaping and executing this agreement on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), offering both conceptual and practical insights. The primary objective is to enhance the integration of transformative strategies for low-emission and climate-resilient development within German and international development cooperation.
This internship focuses on the domain of 'Mitigation.' Key responsibilities in this area encompass:
- Providing support and technical guidance to the BMZ on matters related to international climate policy and negotiations.
- Engaging with climate initiatives and participating in international discussions at forums such as the G7 and G20.
- Assisting the BMZ in daily climate policy operations, including emissions data analysis, national climate contributions (NDCs), and strategies for enhancing ambition.
- Contributing to topics such as Just Transition, feminist climate policy, and the decarbonization of the energy sector.
- Preparing factsheets, speech drafts, and position papers while assisting in the organization of events.
As an intern at the Climate Sector Project, you will gain valuable insights into the team's daily operations. Under the mentorship of experienced team members, your tasks will primarily revolve around climate protection initiatives. Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting research on climate policy issues and preparing briefings, evaluations, and strategic documents.
- Reviewing project proposals related to greenhouse gas emissions reduction and the activities of multilateral development banks.
- Contributing to the development of publications and informational materials regarding Germany's role in international climate policy and development cooperation.
- Providing organizational support for workshops, meetings, and webinars, including preparation and minute-taking.
- Assisting with various project tasks for the BMZ as needed.
Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify for this internship, candidates must be currently enrolled in at least the 3rd semester of a relevant academic program, preferably at the Master's level, focusing on climate change, climate policy, or development cooperation. A solid foundational knowledge of climate change and international climate policy is essential, with familiarity in areas such as greenhouse gas emissions reduction, NDC development, and international climate negotiations being advantageous.
Experience in development cooperation, particularly in developing countries, and knowledge of German development cooperation are beneficial. Practical experience through related internships or positions is required. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills, a structured approach to work, and excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal. Proficiency in German and English is necessary, while knowledge of additional languages such as French or Spanish is a plus.
