Position Overview
We are looking for a dedicated and passionate PhD candidate to engage in innovative research at the intersection of neuroscience and immunology.

Research Group
The successful applicant will join the 'Translational Neuroimmunology' research team, directed by Dr. Róisín McManus, located at the Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen e.V. (DZNE) in Bonn. This group collaborates closely with the Institute of Innate Immunity at the University Hospital Bonn and the ImmunoSensation2 Cluster of Excellence.

Research Focus
Our investigations aim to elucidate the role of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in the advancement of Alzheimer's disease. We specifically explore how immune signaling and metabolic alterations interact to influence microglial behavior, thereby impacting disease progression.

Your Responsibilities
The PhD project will delve into the mechanisms by which a western diet influences lipid metabolism, leading to microglial activation and subsequent neuroinflammation. Utilizing various animal models of dementia, murine cell cultures, and patient samples, your research will aim to identify the innate immune pathways that drive these neuroinflammatory responses.

Key Activities Include:
- Conducting cell culture experiments with murine and human cells
- Performing immune activation assays
- Utilizing advanced laboratory techniques such as metabolic assays, flow cytometry, fluorescence imaging, RNA sequencing, and biochemical methods (e.g., western blot, quantification assays)
- Evaluating the effects of dietary interventions, pharmacological treatments, and genetic modifications on microglial function in various settings (in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro).

Qualifications
Applicants should possess a Master's degree in immunology, neuroscience, biology, or a related field. Experience in experimental animal research and familiarity with immunology, neuroscience, or cellular metabolism is highly advantageous. Candidates with FELASA accreditation will be given preference.

Essential Skills:
- Proficiency in cell culture techniques (e.g., murine microglia or human iPSC-derived microglia)
- Experience with biochemical techniques (protein assays, western blot, PCR); knowledge of immunohistochemistry or flow cytometry is a plus
- Strong command of English for effective communication, writing, and presentation of scientific findings
- A proactive approach to exploring and implementing new methodologies
- Ability to thrive in a diverse and interdisciplinary team of international researchers.
