Research GroupThe successful candidate will join the 'Translational Neuroimmunology' research group, under the guidance of Dr. Róisín McManus. Our group is based at the DZNE and collaborates closely with the Institute of Innate Immunity at the University Hospital Bonn and the ImmunoSensation2 Cluster of Excellence.
Research FocusOur primary research aim is to elucidate the role of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in the advancement of Alzheimer's disease. We investigate how immune signaling and metabolic alterations influence microglial functionality and disease progression.
Your RoleAs a PhD student, you will delve into the mechanisms by which dietary habits, particularly a western diet, instigate lipid alterations that activate microglia, leading to neuroinflammation. Your research will utilize a variety of methodologies, including:
- Animal models of dementia
- Murine cell culture systems
- Patient-derived samples
The objective of your PhD will be to uncover the innate immune pathways that mediate neuroinflammatory responses, thereby contributing to our understanding of Alzheimer's disease.
QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess:
- A Master's degree in immunology, neuroscience, biology, or a related field
- Experience in experimental animal research and a background in immunology, neuroscience, or cellular metabolism
- FELASA accreditation is highly advantageous
- Practical skills in cell culture (e.g., murine microglia or human iPSC-derived microglia) and biochemical techniques (protein assays, western blot, PCR); familiarity with immunohistochemistry or flow cytometry is a plus
- Proficiency in English for effective communication, writing, and presentation of scientific findings
- A keen interest in exploring and innovating new methodologies
- A collaborative spirit to work within a diverse, interdisciplinary team of international researchers
