Research Group
The successful candidate will join the 'Translational Neuroimmunology' research team, under the guidance of Dr. Róisín McManus. This group is situated at the DZNE in Bonn and collaborates closely with the Institute of Innate Immunity at the University Hospital Bonn and the ImmunoSensation2 Cluster of Excellence.
Research Focus
Our primary aim is to investigate the role of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in the progression of Alzheimer's disease. We specifically study how immune signaling and metabolic alterations interact to influence microglial function and disease outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
The PhD candidate will engage in research that has revealed how a western diet can induce lipid changes that activate microglia, leading to neuroinflammation. Utilizing various animal models of dementia, murine cell culture systems, and patient samples, the PhD project will focus on elucidating the innate immune pathways that drive these neuroinflammatory responses, thereby contributing to our understanding of Alzheimer's disease.
Specific Tasks Include:
- Conducting cell culture experiments with murine and human cells.
- Performing immune activation assays and employing cutting-edge laboratory techniques such as metabolic assays, flow cytometry, fluorescence imaging, RNA sequencing, and biochemical methods (e.g., western blot, quantification assays).
- Evaluating the effects of dietary treatments, pharmacological interventions, and genetic modifications on microglial activity in various settings (in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro).
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A Master's degree in immunology, neuroscience, biology, or a related field.
- Prior experience in experimental animal research and knowledge in immunology, neuroscience, or cellular metabolism is highly advantageous.
- FELASA accreditation is considered a strong asset.
- Practical experience in cell culture (e.g., murine microglia or microglia derived from human iPSCs) and biochemical techniques (protein assays, western blot, PCR); familiarity with immunohistochemistry or flow cytometry is a plus.
- Proficiency in English for effective communication, writing, and presentation of scientific findings.
- A keen interest in exploring and developing innovative techniques.
