Position Overview
We are looking for a dedicated and passionate PhD researcher to explore the intersection of neuroscience and immunology within our esteemed institution.

Research Group
The successful candidate will join the 'Translational Neuroimmunology' research team, under the guidance of Dr. Róisín McManus. This group is part of the DZNE in Bonn and collaborates closely with the Institute of Innate Immunity at the University Hospital Bonn, as well as the ImmunoSensation2 Cluster of Excellence.

Research Focus
Our investigations aim to unravel the role of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in the progression of Alzheimer's disease. We are particularly interested in how immune signaling and metabolic alterations influence microglial functionality and, consequently, disease progression.

Your Responsibilities
The PhD project will delve into how a western diet induces lipid alterations that activate microglia, leading to neuroinflammation. Utilizing various animal models of dementia, murine cell cultures, and patient samples, your research will aim to elucidate the innate immune pathways that drive these neuroinflammatory processes.

Key Activities Include:
- Conducting cell culture experiments with murine and human cells
- Performing immune activation assays
- Employing advanced laboratory techniques such as metabolic assays, flow cytometry, fluorescence imaging, RNA sequencing, and biochemical methods (e.g., western blot, quantification assays)
- Assessing the effects of dietary interventions, pharmacological treatments, and genetic modifications on microglial activity in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro.

Qualifications Required
- A Master's degree in immunology, neuroscience, biology, or a related field
- Prior experience in experimental animal research and in the fields of immunology, neuroscience, or cellular metabolism is highly advantageous
- FELASA accreditation is preferred
- Practical experience in cell culture techniques (e.g., murine microglia or human iPSC-derived microglia) and biochemical methods (protein assays, western blot, PCR); familiarity with immunohistochemistry or flow cytometry is a plus
- Proficiency in English for effective communication, writing, and presentation of scientific findings
- A strong interest in exploring and developing innovative research techniques
