Research Doctoral Candidate in Neuroimmunology

Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland Dzne Vollzeit

Position Overview

We are in search of a dedicated and passionate Research Doctoral Candidate to engage in pioneering studies at the intersection of neuroscience and immunology.

The successful candidate will join the 'Translational Neuroimmunology' research team, under the guidance of Dr. Róisín McManus, situated at the DZNE in Bonn, in collaboration with the Institute of Innate Immunity at the University Hospital Bonn and the ImmunoSensation2 Cluster of Excellence.

Research Focus

Our investigations aim to elucidate the role of microglia-driven neuroinflammation in the advancement of Alzheimer's disease. We specifically explore how immune signaling and metabolic alterations interplay to influence microglial functionality, thereby impacting disease progression.

Recent findings indicate that a western diet can induce lipid modifications that activate microglia, leading to neuroinflammation. Utilizing various animal models of dementia, murine cell culture systems, and patient samples, your doctoral research will aim to uncover the innate immune mechanisms that drive these neuroinflammatory responses, contributing to our understanding of Alzheimer's disease.

Key Responsibilities

This role will encompass:

  • Cell culture operations involving murine and human cells.
  • Conducting immune activation assays and employing advanced laboratory techniques, including metabolic assays, flow cytometry, fluorescence imaging, RNA sequencing, and biochemical methods such as western blotting and quantification assays.
  • Integrating dietary interventions, pharmacological inhibition, and genetic modification strategies to evaluate the comprehensive effects of a western diet on microglial behavior in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro.

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Immunology, Neuroscience, Biology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in experimental animal research and studies related to immunology, neuroscience, or cellular metabolism is highly advantageous.
  • FELASA accreditation is a significant asset.
  • Practical experience in cell culture (e.g., murine microglia or microglia derived from human iPSCs) and biochemical techniques (protein assays, western blotting, PCR). Familiarity with immunohistochemistry or flow cytometry is beneficial.
  • Proficiency in English for effective communication, writing, and presentation of scientific findings.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for exploring and innovating with novel methodologies.
  • A readiness to collaborate within a diverse and interdisciplinary team of international researchers.

Employee Benefits

  • Innovation and International Collaboration - Access to a modern infrastructure, state-of-the-art laboratory and office equipment, software tools, and opportunities for international exchanges with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Work-Life Balance - Flexible working hours, mobile working options, 30 days of vacation (plus additional days off on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve), and subsidized transportation options.
  • Family-Friendly Corporate Culture - Support for family needs through parent-child offices, family services, and daycare partnerships.
  • Health Promotion - A comprehensive range of health programs in collaboration with Sozialwerk.Bund.
  • Focus on Professional Development - Tailored training programs and annual HR development meetings to discuss career prospects and growth.
  • Competitive Remuneration - Compensation and conditions aligned with TVöD-Bund, including annual bonuses, capital-forming benefits, and supplementary pension schemes.

  • Supportive Work Environment - A pleasant campus setting with ample greenery, convenient parking, public transport access, and an on-site cafeteria.
  • Weekly Seminars - Opportunities to attend seminars on immunology, neuroscience, and other biomedical topics presented by national and international experts.
  • Possibility to showcase research findings at national and international conferences.

This position is initially offered for a duration of two years.

We eagerly anticipate your application.
