This role is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of extension for an additional two years within the framework of the ERC project.


The Department of Social Ethics focuses on education and research concerning ethical, societal, and governance challenges associated with emerging technologies.

For the ERC project SIMTWIN, we are in search of an individual eager to collaborate with our team in Bonn.

SIMTWIN's objective is to systematically identify and analyze the ethical and societal ramifications of utilizing Digital Twins in the healthcare sector.

While many facets of health simulations, such as Digital Twins, are still developing, it is already apparent that these innovative technologies could significantly alter existing perceptions of health, illness, controllability, vulnerability, representation, and embodiment.

For instance, if every individual possessed a digital representation predicting health events in real-time, it would fundamentally transform their understanding of health, creating new dynamics between their physical and digital selves.

This transformation would also influence medical practices and health policy considerations. Changes in these foundational normative concepts will have significant repercussions for current national and European healthcare governance frameworks.

SIMTWIN's primary aim is to deliver a thorough and nuanced analysis of the normative challenges involved, thereby developing a cohesive theory surrounding health simulations.

By proposing an empirically grounded and normatively sound framework for ethical and societal evaluations of this technology, SIMTWIN will facilitate the creation of practical methods for managing the use of Digital Twins in healthcare.


Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research within the ERC project SIMTWIN
- Lead research initiatives alongside the Principal Investigator
- Develop and execute empirical fieldwork
- Publish independently in international academic journals

Candidate Profile:
- A university degree (Master) with a PhD in ethics, theology, philosophy, social sciences, or law
- Published work in the domains of AI Ethics, social ethics, technology ethics, or fundamental ethical inquiries
- Familiarity with contemporary methods and theories in hermeneutics, science and society studies, empirical ethics, and governance
- Enthusiasm for current transdisciplinary research questions and methodological debates in AI ethics
- Leadership capabilities in guiding research teams
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
