Electrochemical Process Researcher

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, we combine biology and technology across competencies in our business areas of Health, Sustainable Chemistry, and Environment. For more than 70 years, we have been developing processes, technologies, and products and successfully bringing them to industrial application. We conduct research at our sites in close cooperation with numerous universities and research institutes in Germany and abroad.
In the Innovation Field of Sustainable Catalytic Processes, we develop methods to transition to a circular economy in industrial chemical production. Through electrocatalytic power-to-X-to-Y processes, CO2 can be converted into platform chemicals. Our research focuses on the preparation of electrodes and its characterization in electrochemical processes, as well as upscaling to bridge the gap between laboratory and industrial applications. Topics of interest include electrochemical CO2 reduction and electrochemical upgrade of bio-based compounds.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with electrochemical cells to develop and optimize processes
- Conduct literature research on the state of the art in electrochemical processes
- Prepare electrodes containing active catalysts for electrochemical reactions
- Evaluate the electrochemical performance of prepared electrodes
- Correlate raw materials, operating parameters, and production rate to optimize process efficiency
- Evaluate, discuss, and report results to the research team
Requirements
- Applicants should be suitable for Bachelor's/Master's students in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, physical chemistry, or similar courses
- Experience/knowledge in electrochemistry (cyclic voltammetry, electrolysis), organic/inorganic synthesis, material characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR), and analytics (GC- / LC-MS) is an advantage
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international team, with a commitment to quality and a sense of responsibility
