The Director of Audio Engineering will oversee and coordinate the activities of the Audio engineering departments, which include:

  • Overseeing electroacoustic technology and audio electronics across the entire business unit portfolio, including speakers, microphones, headsets, amplifiers, signal processors, and related devices.
  • Conducting necessary research and development to support new product initiatives and maintenance efforts.
  • Accelerating and managing new product development to achieve broader market penetration.
  • Providing leadership and direction to Engineering Managers and teams to ensure Bosch maintains its technological leadership in alignment with market demands.
  • Accountable for project cost and schedule execution within the portfolio.
  • Understanding and implementing Bosch development processes and standards across Engineering departments.
  • Ensuring effective collaboration with other Bosch divisions.
  • Identifying opportunities to deliver superior solutions.
  • Envisioning future technology trends and devising plans to lead in those areas.
  • Managing the technology portfolio across multiple business lines.
  • Direct Reports: 5 Managers, 2 Directors, Team size: 70.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering and Product Development

  • Supports all engineering and product development activities for designated product areas.
  • Collaborates creatively with product management to identify technologies and solutions that meet customer needs.
  • Engages with product management throughout the new product development process from concept to market launch using Bosch's stage-gate process.
  • Consults with management, production, and logistics teams to assess engineering feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.
  • Directs departmental efforts to design new products, modify existing designs, enhance production methods, and develop testing protocols.
  • Integrates design teams with supply chain and manufacturing processes.
  • Develops the technical capabilities, knowledge, and skills of the engineering function to be recognized as a competitive advantage by customers and other organizational functions.

Budget Management and Operating Costs

  • Forecasts departmental operating costs and directs the preparation of budget proposals.
  • Conceptualizes, understands, and justifies the financial rationale for new product development programs, including cost estimation, ROI, make-vs-buy analysis, and capital equipment justification.
  • Builds relationships with technology providers and vendors.
  • Collaborates closely with Business Line and Product Managers to set R&D priorities and initiatives.

Management Duties:

  • Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of a team of engineers and technicians.
  • Estimates staffing needs, recruits, and develops top talent.
  • Defines and assigns work responsibilities.
  • Analyzes technology trends and market demands to plan projects effectively.
  • Aims to establish world-class Engineering Centers of Excellence.
  • Maps essential skills required to achieve world-class status.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Physics, with at least 10 years of design experience and 5 years of management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of acoustics and electroacoustic product design, including hardware, firmware, and software development.
  • Preferred knowledge of professional audio speaker design and construction.
  • Preferred expertise in transducer design.
  • Preferred experience in professional audio product design, including amplifiers and signal processors.
  • Demonstrated success in employing rapid product development techniques to optimize project timelines within budget.
  • Knowledge and effective application of lean principles, manufacturing engineering, and engineering process control methods.
  • Ability to allocate resources effectively for specific product initiatives.
  • Exceptional team leadership abilities.
  • Outstanding communication skills for presenting to customers and prospects.
  • Thorough understanding of financial and managerial accounting principles related to product development and engineering initiatives.
  • Proven experience in personnel management and budget preparation.
  • Willingness to travel between company locations and to customer sites, including international travel.
