Role OverviewThe Senior Director of Audio Engineering is responsible for leading and coordinating the activities of the Audio Engineering departments, including:
- Overseeing electroacoustic technology and audio electronics across the entire business unit portfolio, which includes speakers, microphones, headsets, amplifiers, signal processors, and related equipment.
- Conducting necessary research and development to support new product innovation and maintenance efforts.
- Driving and managing new product initiatives to facilitate quicker and broader market entry.
- Providing strategic leadership and direction to Engineering Managers and teams to ensure Bosch maintains its technological edge in response to market demands.
- Accountable for project cost and schedule management within the portfolio.
- Implementing Bosch development processes and standards across Engineering departments.
- Ensuring effective collaboration with other Bosch divisions.
- Identifying opportunities to deliver superior solutions.
- Anticipating technological advancements and formulating plans to lead in those areas.
- Managing the technology portfolio across multiple business lines.
- Direct Reports: 5 Managers, 2 Directors, Team size: 70.
Specific Responsibilities:
Engineering and Product Development- Facilitating all engineering and product development activities for designated product areas.
- Collaborating creatively with product management to identify technologies and solutions that meet customer needs.
- Engaging with product management throughout the new product development process from conception to market launch using Bosch's stage-gate process.
- Consulting with management, production, and logistics teams to assess engineering feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and customer demand for both new and existing products.
- Directing departmental efforts to design new products, modify existing designs, enhance production techniques, and develop testing protocols.
- Integrating design teams with supply chain and manufacturing operations.
- Building the technical capabilities and expertise of the engineering function to be recognized as a competitive advantage by customers and other organizational functions.
- Forecasting departmental operating costs and directing budget preparation.
- Understanding and defending the financial justification for new product development initiatives, including cost estimation, ROI, make-vs-buy analysis, and capital equipment justification.
- Establishing relationships with technology providers and vendors.
- Collaborating closely with Business Line and Product Managers to prioritize R&D initiatives.
- Supervising, coordinating, and reviewing the work of engineering and technical staff.
- Estimating personnel requirements, recruiting, and developing top talent.
- Defining and assigning work responsibilities.
- Analyzing technology trends and market demands to plan projects effectively.
- Continuously striving to build world-class Engineering Centers of Excellence.
- Mapping critical skills necessary to achieve world-class status.
- A Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Physics, with a minimum of 10 years of design experience and 5 years of management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong working knowledge of acoustics and electroacoustic product design, as well as professional audio systems development, including hardware, firmware, and software design.
- Preferred experience in professional audio speaker design and construction.
- Preferred knowledge of transducer design.
- Preferred expertise in professional audio product design, including amplifiers and signal processors.
- Demonstrated success in employing rapid product development techniques to optimize project timelines within budget constraints.
- Familiarity with lean principles, manufacturing engineering, and engineering process control methods.
- Ability to identify and allocate resources for specific product initiatives.
- Exceptional team leadership capabilities.
- Outstanding communication skills for presenting to customers and prospects.
- Comprehensive understanding of financial and managerial accounting principles related to product development and engineering initiatives.
- Proven experience in personnel supervision and budget management.
- Willingness to travel between company locations and to customer sites, including international travel.
