Position Overview: The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the Institute of Materials Science is seeking a dedicated Research Associate / PhD Student to contribute to innovative research in the field of materials science and nanotechnology.

Research Objectives: The successful candidate will engage in the Collaborative Research Center CRC1415, focusing on the chemistry of synthetic 2D materials. The primary goal is to integrate quantum mechanical (QM) methods with cutting-edge machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze and predict the electronic and magnetic characteristics of two-dimensional polymers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct extensive QM calculations utilizing density functional theory.
  • Develop Python-based tools for data analysis and enhance ML-driven computational workflows.
  • Collaborate closely with synthetic chemists to validate the synthesis of novel materials.
  • Contribute to the establishment of data-driven design principles for innovative 2D polymers aimed at applications in catalysis and energy storage.

Qualifications: Candidates should possess a university degree (Master/Diploma) in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in quantum mechanical methods and machine learning approaches is essential. A strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, excellent communication skills in English, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are required. Familiarity with programming languages such as Fortran and Python, as well as experience with PyTorch, is highly advantageous.
