Position Overview: The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the Institute of Materials Science is seeking a dedicated Research Associate / PhD Student to contribute to innovative research in the field of materials science and nanotechnology.

Research Objectives: The successful candidate will engage in a collaborative research project within the Collaborative Research Center CRC1415, focusing on the chemistry of synthetic 2D materials. The primary goal is to integrate quantum mechanical (QM) methods with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze and predict the electronic and magnetic characteristics of two-dimensional polymers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct extensive QM calculations utilizing density functional theory.
  • Develop Python-based tools for data analysis and enhance ML computational workflows.
  • Collaborate closely with synthetic chemists to validate the synthesis of novel materials.
  • Contribute to the interdisciplinary research environment of CRC1415.

Qualifications: Candidates should possess a university degree (Master/Diploma) in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in quantum mechanical methods and machine learning approaches is essential. Strong commitment, interdisciplinary thinking, teamwork, and excellent communication skills in English are required. Familiarity with Fortran, Python, and PyTorch is highly advantageous.
