Position Overview:
Join the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the Institute of Materials Science as a Research Associate / PhD Student. This role is designed for individuals aiming to enhance their academic qualifications, typically through a PhD program. The position is initially limited to 36 months, with the possibility of extension, and is open to candidates interested in part-time work arrangements.

Key Responsibilities:

As part of the Collaborative Research Center CRC1415 focused on the Chemistry of Synthetic 2D Materials, your research will involve:

  • Integrating quantum mechanical (QM) methods with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze and predict the electronic and magnetic characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) polymers.
  • Establishing data-driven design principles to be utilized in generative AI frameworks for the creation of innovative 2D polymers with specific QM properties aimed at catalysis and energy storage.
  • Collaborating closely with synthetic chemists to validate the synthesis of new materials, fostering an interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Conducting extensive QM calculations using density functional theory and developing Python-based tools for data analysis.
  • Enhancing ML-driven computational workflows to investigate structure-property and property-property relationships.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A university degree (Master/Diploma) in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency and practical experience in quantum mechanical methods and machine learning approaches, including force field development and generative models.
  • A strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Fortran and Python, along with experience in PyTorch, is highly desirable.
  • Prior computational experience in research projects related to organic molecules and materials is advantageous but not mandatory.
