Position Overview: The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the Institute of Materials Science is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Research Associate / PhD Student. This position is intended for those aiming to achieve further academic qualifications, typically a PhD, within a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities: The primary focus of this research role is to contribute to the Collaborative Research Center CRC1415, which investigates the chemistry of synthetic 2D materials. The successful candidate will utilize quantum mechanical (QM) methods alongside advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze and predict the electronic and magnetic characteristics of two-dimensional polymers. Specific tasks include:

  • Conducting extensive QM calculations using density functional theory.
  • Developing Python-based tools for data analysis.
  • Enhancing ML-based computational workflows to explore relationships between structure and properties.

This role requires close collaboration with synthetic chemists to validate the synthesis of novel materials, ensuring a rich interdisciplinary research experience.

Qualifications: Candidates should possess a university degree (Master/Diploma) in fields such as physics, chemistry, materials science, or engineering. Essential qualifications include:

  • Experience with quantum mechanical methods and machine learning approaches.
  • Strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and independent research.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.

Familiarity with programming languages such as Fortran and Python, as well as frameworks like PyTorch, is highly advantageous. Previous computational experience in organic materials research is beneficial but not mandatory.
