Associate Researcher in 2D Materials

Position Overview:
Join the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the Institute of Materials Science, where we are seeking a dedicated Research Associate / PhD Student in the Chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology. This role is designed for individuals aiming to further their academic qualifications, typically leading to a PhD.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research within the Collaborative Research Center CRC1415, focusing on the chemistry of synthetic 2D materials.
  • Utilize quantum mechanical (QM) methods alongside advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze and predict the electronic and magnetic characteristics of two-dimensional polymers.
  • Establish data-driven design principles to be integrated into generative AI frameworks aimed at developing innovative 2D polymers with specific QM properties for applications in catalysis and energy storage.
  • Collaborate closely with synthetic chemists to validate the synthesis of new materials, fostering an interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Perform extensive QM calculations utilizing density functional theory and develop Python-based tools for data analysis.
  • Advance ML-based computational workflows to investigate structure-property and property-property relationships.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A university degree (Master/Diploma) in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in quantum mechanical methods and machine learning approaches, including force field development and generative models.
  • A strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
  • Prior experience with programming languages such as Fortran, Python, and PyTorch is highly desirable.
  • Experience in computational research involving organic molecules and materials is advantageous but not mandatory.
