Position: Research Scientist in Structural Biology
As a Research Scientist in Structural Biology, you will be responsible for working on a cutting-edge experimental research project focusing on the structure-function analysis of chromatin in archaea. The main objective is to delve into the evolutionary path that led to the development of histone tails and tail-based regulatory mechanisms in eukaryotes from an ancient archaeal predecessor, while exploring the potential roles played by these tails in proto-eukaryotic chromatin. This hands-on role will involve merging tail-less histones of a model archaeon with selected eukaryotic or Asgard histone tails both in vitro and in vivo to study their structural and functional impacts on a molecular level.
This project will encompass a diverse range of scientific disciplines including biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology. Specifically, the structural aspect of the project will entail utilizing cryo-EM single particle analysis of nucleosomes, FIB-milling of archaeal cells, and cryo electron tomography (cryo-ET) combined with subtomogram averaging of chromatin fibres.
Furthermore, this undertaking will involve a close partnership with the research team of Naomichi Takemata from Kyoto University, fostering regular communication and scientific exchange between the collaborators.

Requirements:
- PhD in structural biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related fields (or nearing completion of PhD)
- Proficiency in cryo-EM/cryo-ET data acquisition and processing
- Experience in biochemistry including protein expression & purification, and DNA-protein complex characterization
- Familiarity with working via command line
- Strong passion for the research subject, along with high motivation and dedication
- Ability to work independently and innovatively within an international team fostering a highly collaborative environment
- Outstanding communication and presentation abilities, with fluency in English
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in microbiology and handling anaerobic microorganisms
- Basic programming skills
- Knowledge of HPC computing
