Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to become part of our innovative research initiative centered on the structural and functional analysis of chromatin within archaea. This project is designed to explore the evolutionary trajectory of histone tails from an ancestral archaeal form to eukaryotic organisms, focusing on the significance of these tails in proto-eukaryotic chromatin.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Integrate tail-less histones with either eukaryotic or Asgard histone tails for both in vitro and in vivo experimentation.
  • Conduct detailed molecular-level structural and functional assessments.
  • Engage in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) single particle analysis of nucleosomes.
  • Perform focused ion beam (FIB) milling of archaeal cells.
  • Utilize cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) and subtomogram averaging techniques for chromatin fiber analysis.

This role will require a broad spectrum of skills encompassing biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology methodologies. You will collaborate closely with the laboratory of Naomichi Takemata, fostering regular scientific dialogue and exchange with research partners.

Qualifications
  • PhD in structural biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field (or nearing completion).
  • Demonstrated experience in cryo-EM/cryo-ET data acquisition and processing.
  • Strong proficiency in biochemistry, including protein expression and purification, as well as DNA-protein complex characterization.
  • Familiarity with command line operations.
  • A genuine passion for the research area, along with high motivation and dedication.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an international team environment.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with fluency in English.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience in microbiology and working with anaerobic microorganisms.
  • Basic programming capabilities.
  • Knowledge of high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
