This exciting opportunity is available within the framework of the DFG-funded project "Confluence Mixing: Near-Field Hydrodynamic Controls of Intermodal Behavior and Implications for Fish Ecology (CofeMix+)". The research aims to advance our understanding of confluence mixing by providing fundamental theory-based insights into the effects of jetting, flow stagnation, and river regulation on intermodal behavior and fish ecology.
Job OverviewWe are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to investigate complex mixing interfaces generated in shallow, rough-bedded river environments. Field experiments will be conducted at a wide range of hydrological conditions using remote sensing and instrumental measurements. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with an international team of researchers and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in this field.
About the ProjectThe project focuses on improving our understanding of confluence mixing through experimental and theoretical approaches. This will involve assessing the effects of near-field hydrodynamic controls on intermodal behavior and fish ecology. The research will also explore the dynamics of mixing and its implications for aquatic ecosystems.
Your Responsibilities- Plan, prepare, and conduct field-based experiments on river hydrodynamics, mixing processes, and fish observations at models of river confluences.
- Analyze and model mixing processes and fish trajectories using acquired data.
- Collaborate with the research team to write scientific reports and papers based on project results.
- Completed PhD degree in river sciences, fluvial hydrodynamics, hydraulics, or fluvial ecology.
- Experience in carrying out field-based experimental research in fluvial hydrodynamics, proven by published papers.
- Desirable expertise in acoustic Doppler velocimetry, ExploreV software, topo-geodetical measurements, and visualization of flow in the field.
- Good knowledge of English, German (C1 desirable), and basics of Italian.
We offer a competitive salary according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (TVöD Bund), paid up to E13 depending on personal qualifications and tasks assigned. This full-time position comes with 39 working hours per week and is open to part-time work. The initial contract duration is 3 years.
