The United Nations University (UNU) is a global network of scholars dedicated to research that informs policy, enhances capacity, and disseminates knowledge in alignment with the principles of the United Nations Charter. UNU's mission is to contribute to resolving critical global challenges through research and capacity building.

For over forty years, UNU has served as a trusted think tank for unbiased research on issues such as human survival, conflict prevention, sustainable development, and welfare. With a team of over 400 researchers across 12 countries, UNU's initiatives encompass the entire spectrum of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, generating impactful knowledge to foster positive global change. The organization collaborates with more than 200 UN agencies and leading academic institutions worldwide.

The UNU Vice-Rectorate in Europe (UNU-VIE), established in 2007, is one of two Vice-Rectorates and the only one situated outside Japan. UNU-VIE aims to enhance UNU's presence in Europe and support its global institutional development by facilitating collaboration and sharing expertise through joint activities and projects.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Vice-Rector in Europe and the Director of UNU-EHS, the selected candidate will undertake the following:

1. Fundraising and Diversification of Funding Sources:

  • Assist in managing donor relations and identifying international funding sources;
  • Develop a comprehensive resource mobilization strategy for UNU-EHS/UNU-VIE;
  • Support efforts to secure essential core funding for operational activities;
  • Explore innovative funding opportunities with the private sector and international NGOs;
  • Facilitate research divisions in obtaining flexible and project-specific funding;
  • Analyze the European funding landscape, focusing on research opportunities.

2. Grant Proposal Development Support:

  • Share information on funding opportunities within UNU-EHS and other UNU institutes;
  • Assist in project consortium development and grant proposal compilation;
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure high-quality funding submissions;
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of grant-related information.

3. Strengthening Institutional and Strategic Partnerships:

  • Enhance relations with host country donors to increase core contributions;
  • Engage with federal and regional ministries to seek funding contributions;
  • Support partnerships with the European Commission for project acquisition;
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with local NGOs and organizations for potential funding;
  • Facilitate collaboration across UNU through joint resource mobilization activities.

4. Strategic Communication and Visibility Enhancement:

  • Strengthen communication with donors to maintain support for academic research;
  • Collaborate with the Communication Unit to ensure donor visibility.

5. Additional Duties:

Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Performance Indicators
  • Identification of potential donors and funding opportunities;
  • Delivery of a resource mobilization strategy;
  • Support for grant proposals and timely follow-up;
  • Maintenance of an accurate grant-related information database;
  • Effective communication with stakeholders and partners;
  • Establishment of UNU as a reliable partner in research and funding.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's degree in Administration, Development Studies, Economics, or related fields;
  • PhD is an asset.

Experience:

  • Minimum of four years of relevant experience in grant procurement and project management;
  • Proven experience in international fundraising, particularly with the European Commission;
  • Expertise in grant management procedures and proposal writing;
  • Experience in multi-stakeholder project coordination;
  • Strong skills in budget development and document drafting;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and German, both written and spoken;
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is a plus.
Contract and Remuneration

The successful candidate will be engaged under a Consultant Contract. Remuneration will be based on experience and includes paid annual leave.
