For over forty years, UNU has served as a vital think tank, providing unbiased research on critical issues such as human survival, conflict resolution, sustainable development, and social welfare. With a team of over 400 researchers across 12 countries, UNU's work encompasses the full spectrum of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, producing knowledge that is relevant for policy-making aimed at fostering positive global change. The organization collaborates with more than 200 UN agencies, universities, and research institutions worldwide.
The United Nations University Vice-Rectorate in Europe (UNU-VIE), established in 2007, is one of two Vice-Rectorates and the only one situated outside Japan. UNU-VIE aims to enhance UNU's presence in Europe and supports the global institutional development of UNU by facilitating collaboration across the organization and sharing expertise through joint initiatives and projects.
Key ResponsibilitiesUnder the guidance of the Vice-Rector in Europe and the Director of UNU-EHS, the appointee will undertake the following tasks:
1. Fundraising and Diversification of Funding Sources:
- Assist the Vice-Rector in establishing and maintaining relationships with donors while identifying international funding opportunities;
- Develop a comprehensive resource mobilization strategy for UNU-EHS/UNU-VIE, optimizing resource mobilization efforts;
- Support the Vice-Rector in securing essential core funding to maintain operational activities;
- Investigate new funding avenues with the private sector, including foundations and international NGOs;
- Assist research divisions in acquiring both flexible and project-specific funding;
- Map and analyze funding opportunities within the European landscape, particularly in Germany.
2. Grant Proposal Development Support:
- Disseminate information on funding opportunities internally within UNU-EHS and other UNU institutes;
- Facilitate project consortium development and the preparation of grant proposals in collaboration with research teams;
- Engage with stakeholders to ensure high-quality funding submissions;
- Maintain a comprehensive database of grant-related information, including potential donors and their requirements.
3. Strengthening Institutional and Strategic Donor Partnerships:
- Enhance relations with host country donors to sustain and increase core contributions;
- Build connections with federal and regional ministries in Germany to seek contributions for core funding;
- Support the Vice-Rector in establishing partnerships with the European Commission for project funding;
- Identify and cultivate partnerships with local NGOs and organizations interested in supporting UNU;
- Facilitate collaboration across UNU by sharing knowledge and developing joint resource mobilization activities.
4. Strategic Communication and Visibility Enhancement:
- Support effective communication with donors to maintain national and global interest in UNU's research;
- Collaborate with the Communication Unit to ensure visibility for donors and partners.
5. Additional Duties:
Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

1) Education:
- Master's degree or equivalent in relevant fields such as Administration, Development Studies, or Environmental Science;
- PhD is an asset.
2) Required Experience:
- Minimum of four years of relevant experience in grant procurement and project management;
- Proven track record in international fundraising, particularly with the European Commission;
- Experience in grant management procedures and proposal writing;
- Ability to research and identify funding sources and requirements;
- Experience in managing multi-stakeholder projects;
- Proficiency in budget development;
- Strong written communication skills;
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.
3) Language Proficiency:
- Fluency in English and German, both written and spoken;
- Knowledge of another UN official language is a plus.
The successful candidate will be engaged under a Consultant Contract. This position does not confer international civil servant status.
