Lead Specialist in Programme Development

Organizational Unit: Peacekeeping Training Programme Unit (PTPU)

Position Overview: Under the guidance of the Manager of PTPU, the Senior Programme Specialist is tasked with the following responsibilities, adhering to relevant policies and procedures:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and coordinate UNITAR's initiatives in the domain of Online Learning and Education by:
    • Formulating, coordinating, and supervising the planning, execution, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of educational projects to ensure alignment with UNITAR's strategic framework;
    • Establishing and nurturing partnerships with potential donors, including non-traditional sources, to secure support for UNITAR's educational initiatives;
    • Ensuring effective coordination of educational activities across UNITAR and with various stakeholders including the UN System, governments, NGOs, and the private sector;
    • Managing academic tasks as they arise or as directed by the supervisor;
    • Assessing training needs and collaborating with academic partners to design and deliver learning interventions;
    • Developing academic strategies aligned with the programme's long-term objectives and implementing these within the Unit;
    • Supervising the performance of the Online Learning and Education Section staff;
    • Engaging in external marketing, public relations, and relationship-building with academic partners to enhance programme visibility and foster new partnerships;
    • Coordinating the creation of outreach materials and organizing outreach events;
    • Identifying opportunities for further development at the Programme level and incubating new initiatives to enhance the educational portfolio;
    • Ensuring the application of the latest technologies and methodologies across the Programme, maintaining high-quality standards for learning materials and reports.
  • Support to the Programme Manager:
    • Providing substantive support to the Programme Manager through document preparation, briefing points, and presentations;
    • Delivering training courses as required;
    • Producing various written outputs as requested.

  • Effective coordination and execution of educational activities;
  • Strategic and technical contributions to the programme;
  • Identification of relevant synergies and funding opportunities;
  • Advocacy and dissemination of the programme's products and services;
  • Successful representation of the Programme at various events and meetings.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Experience: At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management in international affairs, peacebuilding, and training development.
  • Education: Master’s degree or equivalent in International Relations, Political Science, Teaching and Pedagogy, Peace and Security, or a related field.
  • Languages: Fluency in English; knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
