For over forty years, UNU has served as a premier think tank for unbiased research on issues such as human survival, conflict prevention, sustainable development, and social welfare. With a team of over 400 researchers across 12 countries, UNU's initiatives encompass the entire spectrum of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, generating actionable knowledge to foster positive global transformations. The organization maintains over 200 partnerships with UN agencies, leading universities, and research institutions worldwide.

The UNU Vice-Rectorate in Europe (UNU-VIE), established in 2007, is one of two Vice-Rectorates and the only one situated outside Japan. UNU-VIE aims to enhance UNU's presence in Europe and support its global institutional development by facilitating collaboration across UNU and the UN, while sharing knowledge and expertise through joint activities and projects.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Vice-Rector in Europe and the Director of UNU-EHS, the selected candidate will undertake the following responsibilities:

1. Fundraising and Diversification of Funding Sources:

  • Assist the Vice-Rector in Europe with donor engagement and the identification of international funding sources;
  • Develop a resource mobilization strategy for UNU-EHS/UNU-VIE, enhancing respective fundraising efforts;
  • Support the Vice-Rector in securing essential core funding to maintain the operational activities of UNU-VIE and UNU-EHS;
  • Investigate new funding avenues with the private sector, including foundations, corporations, and international NGOs;
  • Assist research divisions in obtaining both flexible and project-specific funding;
  • Map funding opportunities within the European landscape, focusing on research funding in Germany.

2. Support in Grant Proposal Development:

  • Disseminate information on funding opportunities internally within UNU-EHS and to other UNU institutes as appropriate;
  • Facilitate project consortium development and assist in compiling grant proposals in collaboration with research teams;
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure high-quality funding submissions;
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of grant-related information, including potential donors and their requirements.

3. Strengthening Institutional and Strategic Donor Partnerships:

  • Enhance relations with host country donors to sustain and increase core contributions;
  • Foster connections with federal and regional ministries in Germany to seek contributions towards core funding;
  • Assist the Vice-Rector in establishing partnerships with the European Commission for pillar assessed projects;
  • Identify and cultivate partnerships with local NGOs and organizations interested in supporting UNU;
  • Support the Vice-Rector in promoting collaboration across UNU through knowledge sharing and joint project development.

4. Enhancing Strategic Communication and Visibility:

  • Support communication efforts with donors to maintain national and global attention on policy-relevant research;
  • Collaborate with the Communication Unit to ensure adequate visibility for donors and partners.

5. Additional Duties:

Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Key Performance Indicators
  • Timely identification of potential donors and funding opportunities;
  • Quality delivery of a resource mobilization strategy;
  • Efficient support for grant proposal submissions;
  • Accurate maintenance of grant-related databases;
  • Effective communication with donors and stakeholders;
  • UNU's reputation as a reliable partner in research and funding.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in relevant fields such as Administration, Development Studies, or Project Management;
  • PhD is considered an asset.

Experience:

  • Minimum of four years of relevant experience in grant procurement and project management;
  • Proven track record in international fundraising, particularly with the European Commission and in Germany;
  • Experience in grant management procedures and proposal writing;
  • Ability to research and identify funding sources and interpret funding guidelines;
  • Experience in managing multi-stakeholder projects and developing budgets;
  • Strong written communication skills for drafting strategies and reports;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and German, both written and spoken;
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.
