Researcher in Functional Omics of Ageing

Position Overview
We are seeking motivated and dedicated candidates interested in exploring the functional omics related to ageing and age-associated conditions as part of their doctoral studies.
The successful candidate will be integrated into the Population Health Sciences team, under the guidance of Prof Dr Monique M B Breteler, at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn. Our research focuses on understanding the causes and biomarkers of both normal and pathological mental and physical health, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases and the ageing process.
Our primary research is conducted through the Rhineland Study, a longitudinal cohort study that emphasizes comprehensive phenotyping. Currently, the study encompasses over participants at baseline, with follow-up data available for nearly 5000 participants, and ongoing data collection efforts. The clinical data we gather includes extensive structural and functional brain imaging, cognitive and neurological evaluations, cardiovascular and anthropometric measurements, sensory system assessments, medical history, and medication usage. Additionally, we possess detailed exposome data, which includes insights into physical activity, dietary habits, and exposure to environmental toxins and temperature variations. Notably, we have a wealth of multi-omics data from both baseline and follow-up, encompassing genomic and epigenomic data (such as miRNA sequencing and DNA methylation), transcriptomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics.
Key Responsibilities
- Integrate various layers of OMICS data (both cross-sectional and longitudinal) to address biological questions concerning health outcomes, with a specific focus on neurodegeneration.
- Participate in and oversee data acquisition and processing.
- Conduct data analysis and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Engage actively in national and international conferences.
Qualifications
- A strong master's degree in bioinformatics, epidemiology, biomedical sciences, or related fields.
- Demonstrated interest in quantitative research with robust analytical skills.
- Initial experience in analyzing high-throughput sequencing data (e.g., RNASeq) and performing quality control for such data is advantageous, as is experience in epidemiological research or large-scale clinical studies.
- Basic programming experience (preferably in R).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Proficiency in both spoken and written English is essential.
- A collaborative spirit and enjoyment of working within an interdisciplinary and international team.

The PhD position will be part of the Bonn International Graduate School of Clinical and Population Science, with additional training in epidemiological, statistical, and computational methods provided as necessary. The position is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of extension.
