Position Overview
The Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies is inviting applications for the esteemed position of Chair of Philosophy (pay grade W3). The successful applicant will embody the comprehensive scope of philosophy in both teaching and research.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate a strong emphasis on the history of philosophy, coupled with expertise in theoretical philosophy. A robust research portfolio, evidenced by internationally recognized publications and a well-established academic network, is essential, alongside a proven track record in securing external funding.
Furthermore, candidates should possess a research focus that aligns with the thematic priorities of the University of Passau. A commitment to enhancing the faculty's profile is also expected.
Teaching Responsibilities
The successful candidate will oversee the ethics and philosophy modules within the Teacher Education Programmes and various interdisciplinary bachelor’s and master’s degree offerings, particularly those managed by the Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies. Additionally, they will be responsible for teaching courses in the philosophy of religion.
Involvement in teacher education assessments for the Bavarian state examination is required, and the ability to teach in both English and German is essential. Experience in developing degree programmes is considered advantageous.
Research and Collaboration
Academics within our five faculties engage in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer activities that meet the highest standards. Key areas of focus include Europe, sustainability, and digitalization, fostering intensive interdisciplinary collaboration both within the University and with numerous national and international partners.

Candidate Qualifications
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree and demonstrate both pedagogical skill and academic excellence, typically established through the quality of their doctoral research and subsequent scholarly achievements. Candidates must also possess the German formal postdoctoral habilitation qualification or equivalent academic accomplishments obtained in a higher education setting.
In accordance with institutional guidelines, candidates must not exceed 52 years of age at the time of appointment.
