Responsibilities
The role involves providing academic services for the aforementioned project. Research associates are encouraged to engage in independent research and pursue further academic qualifications, including doctoral studies, alongside their work duties.
This project focuses on understanding the dynamics of the oceanic surface mixed layer. Within this layer, various processes from different dynamical regimes (such as small-scale turbulence, submesoscales, and surface waves) facilitate diverse energy transfer mechanisms. The successful candidate will concentrate on submesoscales, a recently identified dynamical regime crucial for the energetics and dynamics of the surface layer, which remains inadequately understood. The selected individual will employ high-resolution numerical modeling techniques and utilize available observations to assess model outcomes. The candidate will be integrated into the 'Theoretical Oceanography' working group and the Research Training Group 'ENERGY', which provides specialized training courses, seminars, mentoring, and opportunities for international research visits.
Profile
A university degree in a relevant discipline is required.
A master's level degree in oceanic or atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics, or a related field is necessary at the time of appointment.
Proficiency in Linux/Unix, a script-based programming language (such as Matlab or Python), and experience in ocean modeling are essential.
A background in geophysical fluid mechanics would be advantageous.
Candidates should possess strong English language skills and enjoy collaborating within an international and interdisciplinary team.
Enthusiasm, self-motivation, and a genuine interest in independent research in oceanography and numerical modeling, as well as in the dissemination and publication of scientific findings, are expected from applicants.
