Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will engage in academic contributions to the project focusing on ocean surface layer energetics. Responsibilities include conducting research, pursuing independent academic qualifications, and the potential for doctoral studies outside of regular duties.
This research initiative aims to elucidate the dynamics of the oceanic surface mixed layer, investigating various energy transfer mechanisms influenced by different dynamical regimes such as small-scale turbulence and surface waves. The focus will be on submesoscales, a newly identified regime crucial for understanding the energetics and dynamics of the surface layer, which remains inadequately explored. The successful applicant will employ high-resolution numerical modeling techniques alongside available observational data to assess model outcomes. The candidate will collaborate within the 'Theoretical Oceanography' working group and the Research Training Group 'ENERGY', which provides specialized training courses, seminars, mentoring, and opportunities for international research engagements.
Candidate Profile:
Applicants should possess a university degree in a relevant discipline, ideally at the master's level in oceanic or atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field. Proficiency in Linux/Unix, a scripting language (such as Matlab or Python), and experience in ocean modeling are essential. A background in geophysical fluid mechanics is advantageous.
Strong English language skills and a passion for collaborative work in an international and interdisciplinary environment are required. Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm, self-motivation, and a genuine interest in independent research in oceanography and numerical modeling, as well as in the dissemination of scientific findings.
