Work Scope: Part-time
Weekly Hours: 75% of standard work hours
Key Responsibilities:
The role involves providing academic services for the designated project. Research associates are encouraged to engage in independent research and pursue further academic qualifications, including doctoral studies.
This project focuses on understanding the dynamics of the oceanic surface mixed layer, where various energy transfer mechanisms arise from different dynamical regimes, such as small-scale turbulence and surface waves. The selected candidate will concentrate on submesoscales, a newly identified dynamical regime crucial for understanding the energetics and dynamics of the surface layer, which remains inadequately explored. The successful applicant will employ high-resolution numerical modeling techniques alongside available observational data to assess model outcomes. The candidate will be integrated into the 'Theoretical Oceanography' working group and the Research Training Group 'ENERGY', which provides specialized training courses, seminars, mentoring, and opportunities for international research collaborations.
Candidate Profile:
Applicants should possess a university degree in a relevant discipline, ideally at the master's level in oceanic or atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field. Proficiency in Linux/Unix, a scripting language (such as Matlab or Python), and experience in ocean modeling are essential. A background in geophysical fluid mechanics is advantageous.
Strong English language skills and a passion for working within an international and interdisciplinary team are required. Candidates should be enthusiastic, self-driven, and genuinely interested in independent research in oceanography and numerical modeling, as well as in the dissemination of scientific findings.
