This project focuses on understanding the dynamics of the oceanic surface mixed layer, particularly examining energy transfer mechanisms generated by various dynamical regimes such as small-scale turbulence, submesoscales, and surface waves. The successful candidate will concentrate on submesoscales, a newly identified dynamical regime crucial for the energetics and dynamics of the surface layer, which remains inadequately understood. Utilizing high-resolution numerical modeling techniques and available observational data, the candidate will assess model outcomes. The position is integrated within the 'Theoretical Oceanography' working group and the Research Training Group 'ENERGY', which provides specialized training courses, seminars, mentoring, and opportunities for international research collaborations.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will possess a university degree in a relevant discipline, specifically at the master's level in oceanic or atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field.
Essential skills include proficiency in Linux/Unix, familiarity with a script-based programming language (e.g., Matlab, Python), and experience in ocean modeling. A background in geophysical fluid mechanics is advantageous.
Applicants should demonstrate strong English language skills and a passion for working within an international and interdisciplinary team. Enthusiasm, self-motivation, and a genuine interest in independent research in oceanography and numerical modeling, as well as in the dissemination of scientific findings, are essential attributes.
