Dresden, Sachsen, Deutschland Technische Universität Dresden Vollzeit

The Center for Synergy of Systems (SynoSys) is pioneering innovative methodologies across network science, data science, and citizen science to explore intricate phenomena at the convergence of biomedicine, social sciences, and life sciences.

SynoSys aims to foster a scientific perspective on holistic human development, where both physical and mental health are viewed collectively within an increasingly digital and interconnected social and physical landscape.

Within SynoSys, the newly established Junior Research Group on Computational Social Science will concentrate on the societal implications of digital transformation.

This group seeks to deepen the understanding of the complex dynamics surrounding the spread of information on major online platforms and its effects on culture, political behavior, and democratic processes.

We utilize a diverse array of methodologies, including agent-based modeling, time-series analysis, network science, natural language processing, and behavioral experiments conducted both in laboratory settings and real-world environments.

Data Collection Methods:
Data is gathered through various means: utilizing platform APIs, participant recruitment, or through data donations. Our goal is to adopt a transdisciplinary approach that encourages methodological innovation.

The Junior Research Group on Computational Social Science is led by Philipp Lorenz-Spreen.

At Technische Universität Dresden, diversity is a fundamental aspect and a quality criterion of an outstanding academic institution.

We invite all candidates who are eager to contribute their skills and productivity to the success of our organization.

The Junior Research Group on Computational Social Science offers a project position for a Research Associate / Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/x) (subject to personal qualifications, employees are compensated according to salary group E 13 TV-L) with a start date as soon as possible.

The position is time-limited with the possibility of extension. The employment period is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG).

Key Responsibilities:
Engage in scientific research activities within the Junior Research Group on Computational Social Science, focusing on the research theme of algorithmically curated online discourse and its influence on political outcomes, with a keen interest in information dissemination, opinion formation, and algorithmic curation, particularly on social media platforms.

Additional Responsibilities:
Contribute to the writing of scientific publications in relevant journals; conduct comprehensive literature reviews; participate in professional conferences and present research findings; assist in the preparation of applications for external funding.

Qualifications:

A university degree in quantitative social sciences or applied computational sciences, along with a PhD. A strong interest in working within a transdisciplinary research environment that intersects computer science and social sciences, with potential connections to complex systems, algorithmic auditing, and psychology.

Proficiency in empirical data analysis using programming languages such as Python or R.

Ideally, candidates will have experience in data collection from social media, algorithmic auditing, causal inference, and possibly online field experiments, along with the ability to thrive in a collaborative interdisciplinary setting and a strong command of spoken and written English.

What We Offer:
A unique opportunity to engage in complex scientific research, including topics such as information dissemination on social networks, language dynamics, and the emergence of polarization.

We provide 30 days of paid annual leave, a year-end bonus, additional pension provisions (VBL), a dynamic and international research environment with a high degree of creative freedom, and a meaningful position that allows for engagement with diverse tasks and developments in the research field.

Flexible working hours and home office arrangements are available, along with various health promotion and work-life balance initiatives, such as family support services and health management programs. Numerous opportunities for professional development, including language courses, IT training, and seminars, are also offered. Technische Universität Dresden is committed to increasing the representation of women in academia and research. We encourage applications from women and welcome candidates with disabilities.

We invite applications from individuals who meet the qualifications outlined above.

All application documents should be submitted in English and must include:

- A cover letter detailing your motivation for applying;

- A curriculum vitae with a list of publications;

- If applicable, an English summary of your dissertation (maximum 2 pages);

- Degree certificates;

- Names and contact details of two references.

We look forward to receiving your detailed application, including the required documentation.
