The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

Our Junior Research Group "Systems Immunology & Single-Cell Biology", headed by Dr. Felix Hartmann, is looking for a computational scientist to join the team in Heidelberg as soon as possible.

The progression and clinical outcome of cancer and other human diseases are influenced by cellular interactions in the tissue microenvironment. Our lab strives to understand how such interactions influence the behavior of the immune system. We are especially interested in the regulation of the tumor-immune microenvironment in different cancer entities (colorectal, breast, melanoma, and others) as well as cardiovascular disease. In addition, we are mechanistically investigating such interactions through genetic manipulation of patient-derived organoid cultures.

To do so, we employ a combination of various approaches, with a focus on a novel spatial proteomic technology termed multiplexed ion beam imaging (MIBI). MIBI enables the quantification of more than 40 proteins and their subcellular spatial localization directly in human tissues. We are combining this data with single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial metabolomics, and epigenetic approaches to conduct multi-omic and spatial profiling of human clinical samples.

**Job description**:

- Independent computational analysis of (spatially-resolved) single-cell datasets
- Establishment and comparison of computational workflows for multiplexed imaging data (image preprocessing, cell segmentation, annotation, clustering, statistical analysis with clinical parameters)
- Overview of the methodological advances in such workflows
- Code documentation and data management
- Contribution to analyses and figures for scientific publications
- Support of group members and instruction of new lab members in computational workflows

**Requirements**:

- Master's degree or PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology or similar fields
- Ability to work in Python and R, and to develop scripts independently
- Experience with Jupyter notebooks, version control (Git), reproducible workflows (e.g. Docker, Conda) and HPC clusters
- Experience with single-cell data or bioimage analysis is a plus, but not required
- A high degree of motivation, reliability, and personal responsibility
- Desire to work collaboratively in teams
- Good conversational skills in English
