The Max-Planck-Institute for Neurobiology of Behaviour – caesar (MPINB) is a leading research institution in the field of neuroethology, dedicated to understanding the neural mechanisms underlying animal behaviour.
Our research group, Neural Information Flow, is focused on investigating the general principles of signal compression, attention, and context-dependency in neural systems. To achieve this, we are studying the foraging behaviour of the roundworm C. elegans.
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD student to join our team and contribute to our research on creating a 'virtual reality' setup for worms to investigate collective foraging behaviour. This project involves a combination of setup development and programming, behavioural assays, and image analysis.
Key qualifications for the position include:
- A master's degree in neuroscience, biophysics, physics, physical chemistry, engineering, computer science, or a related field
- Good knowledge of at least one programming language for data analysis (Python preferred) and a strong interest in quantitative approaches for describing behaviour and neural circuits
- Interest in the analysis of large data sets and modern methods for data analysis, such as machine learning
- Interest in building and developing customized scientific instruments
