Junior Research Scientist in Climate Studies

vor 3 Monaten

Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland ECMWF Vollzeit

The DWD offers fellowships for emerging scientists to engage in a research initiative during a tenure at ECMWF. Selected candidates will be stationed at the ECMWF facilities in Bonn, Germany for a period of two years.

The Junior Research Scientist will collaborate with experts from various divisions within ECMWF. This role will also involve support and partnership with the Centre for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis, which includes institutions such as the University of Bonn, University of Cologne, and Forschungszentrum Jülich.

A significant aspect of the STEP UP Fellowship program is the professional development training provided by DWD, aimed at enhancing the Early Career Fellows' skills and career trajectory throughout their tenure at ECMWF.

Position Overview

This role is situated within the Earth System Modelling Section of the Research Department at ECMWF. The Fellow will collaborate with seasoned scientists and specialists across various teams, particularly with the Physical Processes Team. The responsibilities will also encompass support and collaboration with the Centre for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis, which includes the University of Bonn, University of Cologne, and Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The primary objective of this position is to enhance the comprehension of clouds and precipitation and their representation in models utilizing radar and lidar observations. Europe boasts a network of observational 'supersites' equipped with ground-based cloud radars and lidars, offering significant potential for assessing and refining model cloud and precipitation forecasts. Recently launched, the EarthCARE satellite will deliver global data on clouds and precipitation with unprecedented detail. ECMWF is actively involved in leveraging EarthCARE data, and this project will explore the synergy between ground-based supersite measurements and the innovative data from EarthCARE. This research will contribute to a deeper understanding of clouds and precipitation, their effects on the global atmosphere, and will inform model advancements for enhanced weather forecasting, including extreme weather events and future climate projections.

About ECMWF

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is a global leader in weather and environmental forecasting. As an international organization, we provide our members and the broader community with essential global weather predictions and data crucial for addressing the climate crisis. Operating as a 24/7 research and operational center, we focus on medium and long-range forecasts and maintain one of the largest meteorological data archives worldwide. Our success relies on the expertise of our scientists and specialists, robust partnerships with 35 Member and Co-operating States, and the utilization of advanced technologies and machine learning across our operations.

ECMWF operates across multiple sites, with a principal office in Reading, UK, a data center/supercomputer in Bologna, Italy, and a significant presence in Bonn, Germany. We recognize the importance of flexibility in our work arrangements and have adopted a hybrid work model, allowing staff to work both in the office and remotely.

Main Responsibilities
  • Adapt existing observation operators for EarthCARE radar and lidar data to apply to ground-based vertically pointing supersite data for comparison with model outputs.
  • Analyze the vertical profiles of cloud and precipitation over Europe (and beyond) in various meteorological regimes, utilizing both ground-based and satellite datasets to identify and rectify model deficiencies.
  • Utilize the Doppler capabilities of ground-based instruments to validate the inaugural Doppler velocity measurements from space and enhance model representations of hydrometer fall speeds.
  • Evaluate new developments in the microphysics scheme within the ECMWF global model to improve the representation of clouds and precipitation for weather forecasting and climate change projections.
Qualifications

Education

  • Completed scientific or technical university degree (Bachelor, Master, Diploma), preferably in fields such as physics, mathematics, computer science, environmental sciences, hydrology, oceanography, or meteorology.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English (minimum B2 CEFR).

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Background in meteorology with experience in cloud physics, remote sensing, or radiative transfer is preferred.
  • Strong programming and statistical analysis capabilities.
  • Experience in model evaluation with observational data, statistical analysis, and managing large datasets is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of written and spoken German (Level A2 CEFR) is a plus.
  • Experience collaborating with international organizations is beneficial.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster a positive and collaborative environment.
  • Proactive and capable of working independently to resolve issues within the field.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess various factors and make informed judgments.
  • Empathy to recognize and address the diverse needs of participants in group settings.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Intercultural competence essential for successful collaboration in international teams.
What We Offer

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of 2,900 Euro for two years, along with individual funding for travel and publication costs in accordance with funding principles. Additional information regarding the potential for fellowship extension and program procedures is available.

Who Can Apply

We value diversity and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, culture, religion/belief, disability, or sexual orientation.

Applications are welcomed from nationals of ECMWF Member States and Co-operating States, as well as all EU Member States.

There is no legal entitlement to the fellowship, and the awarding process is based on the funding principles of the STEP UP Fellowship programs.

Application Process

Interested candidates are invited to apply by the specified deadline. Applications are managed externally to ECMWF.
