Junior Research Scientist in Atmospheric Studies

vor 4 Wochen

Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland ECMWF Vollzeit

The DWD offers fellowships for emerging scientists to engage in a research initiative during a guest residency at ECMWF. Selected fellows will be stationed at the ECMWF facilities in Bonn, Germany for a period of two years.

The Junior Research Scientist will collaborate with experts from various divisions within ECMWF. This role will also involve support and partnership with the Centre for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis, which includes esteemed institutions.

A significant aspect of the STEP UP Fellowship program is the professional development training provided by DWD, aimed at enhancing the Early Career Fellows' skills and career trajectories during their tenure at ECMWF.

Position Overview

This role is situated within the Earth System Modelling Section of the Research Department at ECMWF. The Fellow will collaborate with seasoned scientists and specialists across multiple teams, particularly the Physical Processes Team. The position will also benefit from support and collaboration with the Centre for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis.

The primary objective of this role is to advance the comprehension of clouds and precipitation, as well as their representation in models, utilizing radar and lidar observations. Europe hosts a network of observational 'supersites' equipped with ground-based cloud radars and lidars, which hold substantial potential for assessing and enhancing model forecasts related to clouds and precipitation. Furthermore, the recently launched EarthCARE satellite will provide global insights into clouds and precipitation with unparalleled detail. ECMWF is actively involved in leveraging EarthCARE data, and this project will explore the synergy between ground-based supersite measurements and innovative EarthCARE data. This research will contribute to a deeper understanding of clouds and precipitation, their effects on the global atmosphere, and inform model advancements for enhanced weather forecasting, including extreme weather events and future climate projections.

About ECMWF

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is a global leader in weather and environmental forecasting. As an international entity, we serve our members and the broader community with essential global weather predictions and data crucial for addressing the climate crisis. We operate as a 24/7 research and operational hub focused on medium and long-range forecasts, maintaining one of the largest meteorological data archives worldwide. Our success is built on the expertise of our scientists, robust partnerships with member states, and the utilization of advanced technologies and machine learning in our operations.

ECMWF operates across multiple sites, with a principal office in Reading, a data center in Bologna, and a significant presence in Bonn. We recognize the importance of flexibility in our work arrangements, adopting a hybrid model that allows staff to work both in-office and remotely.

Key Responsibilities
  • Adapt existing observation operators for EarthCARE radar and lidar data to apply to ground-based vertically pointing supersite data for comparative analysis of observations and model outputs.
  • Assess the characteristics of vertical profiles of cloud and precipitation across various meteorological regimes using the complementary strengths of both ground-based and satellite datasets to identify and rectify model shortcomings.
  • Utilize the Doppler capabilities of ground-based instruments to validate the inaugural Doppler velocity measurements from space and enhance model representations of hydrometer fall speeds.
  • Evaluate new developments in the microphysics scheme within the ECMWF global model to contribute to improved representations of clouds and precipitation for weather forecasting and climate change projections.
Qualifications

Education

  • Completed scientific or technical university degree (Bachelor, Master, Diploma), preferably in fields such as physics, mathematics, computer science, environmental sciences, hydrology, oceanography, or meteorology.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English (minimum B2 CEFR).

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Background in meteorology with experience in cloud physics, remote sensing, or radiative transfer is preferred.
  • Strong programming and statistical analysis capabilities.
  • Experience in model evaluation using observational data, statistical analysis, and managing large datasets is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of written and spoken German (Level A2 CEFR) is beneficial.
  • Experience collaborating with international organizations is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills to foster a positive and collaborative environment.
  • Proactive and capable of constructive teamwork.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in problem-solving within the relevant field.
  • Critical thinking skills to assess various factors and make informed judgments.
  • Empathy to recognize and address the diverse needs of participants in group settings.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills to manage a variety of tasks within tight deadlines.
  • Intercultural competence for effective collaboration in international teams.
What We Offer

The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of 2,900 Euro for two years, along with individual funding for travel and publication expenses as per the funding guidelines. Further details regarding the possibility of extending the fellowship for promotion and the program procedures can be found on the relevant website.

Who Can Apply

We value diversity and encourage applications from all individuals, regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.

Applications are welcomed from nationals of ECMWF Member States and Co-operating States, as well as all EU Member States.

There is no legal entitlement to the fellowship, and the awarding is based on the established funding principles for the STEP UP Fellowship programs.

Application Process

Interested candidates are invited to apply by the specified deadline. Applications are managed externally, and further information can be found on the program website.
