Early Career Research Scientist

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Early Career Research Scientist to join our team in the Earth System Assimilation Section of the Research Department.
The successful candidate will work with the Land Modelling and Coupled Assimilation Teams in the Research Department, and the Hydrological Monitoring and Forecasting Team in the Forecasts and Services Department.
Main Responsibilities- Design and implement data denial and forecast experiments with the coupled ECL and CaMaFlood system to assess the impact of observations and data assimilation on flood forecasting.
- Evaluate the experiment results using in-situ river discharge observations.
- Analyze the impact of each land surface observation type (i.e. soil moisture and snow observations) individually.
- Communicate and document scientific results in technical reports, journal publications, conferences, and meetings.
- Master's or Ph.D. degree in a relevant field, such as physics, mathematics, computer science, machine learning, environmental sciences, hydrology, oceanography, or meteorology.
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English (at least level B2 CEFR).
- Expertise in land data assimilation, land surface modeling, and/or hydrological data analysis is desirable.
- Experience in numerical modeling and/or data assimilation is an advantage.
- Background in global or regional simulations with weather or climate models is desirable.
- Knowledge of written and spoken German (Level A2 CEFR) is an asset.
- Experience in cooperation with international organizations is an advantage.
- Strong communication and information skills to create a sustainable positive and trusting climate of discussion when dealing with people.
- Initiative and ability for constructive and collegial cooperation.
- Ability to work independently and on one's own initiative to solve problems appropriately within one's own field of activity.
- Ability to think and judge in order to weigh up different familiar factors and form an appropriate judgment from them.
- Empathy in order to recognize different needs of participants and to be able to take them into account appropriately when dealing with groups.
- Planning and organizational skills with the capacity to work on a diverse range of tasks to tight deadlines.
- Intercultural competence as a prerequisite for successful cooperation in international teams and organizations.
The fellowship will provide a monthly funding of 2,900 Euro for two years and individual expenses for travel and costs for publications in accordance with the funding principles.
