Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Water Permit Writer to join our team. As a key member of our Environmental Quality department, you will play a critical role in reviewing VPDES permit applications and related operation-design submittals for applicability and completeness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze permit applications and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Develop and write enforceable permits for issuance in a timely manner, ensuring technical and procedural accuracy.
  • Provide recommendations and technical support for approval of facility design and operation documents.
  • Collaborate with clients to resolve permit-related compliance and enforcement issues efficiently, openly, fairly, and consistently.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in state and federal environmental regulations and guidelines.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in water quality science, wastewater treatment, and environmental permitting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in PC/database operations and information technology software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with permit writing, review, and enforcement.
  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations, including the Clean Water Act and Virginia State Water Law.
