Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Water Permit Writer to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a key member of our Department of Environmental Quality, you will play a critical role in reviewing VPDES permit applications and related operation-design submittals for applicability and completeness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and write enforceable permits for issuance in a timely manner, ensuring technical and procedural accuracy in accordance with the Clean Water Act and Virginia State Water Law and regulations.
  • Provide recommendations and technical support for approval of facility design and operation documents.
  • Collaborate with clients to resolve permit-related compliance and enforcement actions efficiently, openly, fairly, and consistently.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of water quality science and wastewater treatment.
  • Understanding of state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A combination of education, training, or experience with major coursework in environmental science, environmental engineering, natural resources management, or a related field.
