Lead System and Network Administrator
The Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) serves as a pivotal service hub within the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, employing nearly 100 dedicated professionals.
Our primary mission is to deliver electronic publications and publication databases to the 84 Max Planck Institutes and research centers globally, while also assisting them in developing digital research environments.
The Core Service Operations (CSO) division is responsible for providing critical administrative support across all sectors of MPDL, with a particular emphasis on IT and system management.
Key Responsibilities:- Management and upkeep of predominantly virtualized Linux servers (Debian, Ubuntu) along with the applications hosted on them, including web servers, relational database management systems, content management systems, and various web applications.
- Enhancement and optimization of the virtualized server infrastructure utilizing Puppet and Foreman.
- Development and execution of backup and recovery strategies.
- Operation and enhancement of the open-source monitoring solution Icinga.
- Assurance and improvement of IT security across all systems.
- Administration of network systems.
- Completed education in IT or equivalent credentials.
- Extensive experience in Linux server management.
- Solid understanding of contemporary network and server technologies.
- Familiarity with monitoring tools, Puppet, Git, and VMware-ESXi environments.
- Ideally, experience with application virtualization and continuous integration technologies.
- A meticulous, responsible, and collaborative work approach.
- Eagerness to learn and engage with new technologies.
- Proficient in both German and English.
