The Third Institute of Physics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is seeking to appoint a
Research Assistant (Ph.D. position)
This role is designed for a committed individual to engage in pioneering research in the field of biophysics. The position involves a part-time commitment, with a contract duration of three years and a competitive salary based on pay grade 13 TV-L.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe viscoelastic characteristics of cells are crucial in various biological phenomena that entail significant morphological changes, including adhesion, spreading, growth, beating, division, migration, carcinogenesis, and tissue development. It is generally acknowledged that the primary response to external forces arises from the actin cortex, which is directly linked to the plasma membrane. This membrane/cortex assembly acts as a dynamic structure that governs the cell's morphology and undergoes remodeling on the order of seconds due to protein turnover and myosin-driven contractions, enabling cells to swiftly adapt to external stimuli.
The objective of this research is to differentiate between the intrinsically passive and active attributes of the cortex shell. We aim to investigate whether the passive recruitment of excess surface area, poroelastic relaxation of the cytosol, and active contraction of the cortex represent cellular responses occurring over distinct time frames. The successful candidate will be responsible for integrating a micropipette aspiration system with an atomic force microscope (AFM) that is linked to a spinning disk fluorescence microscope. This setup will facilitate the exploration of the role of the plasma membrane reservoir and the membrane/actin cortex interaction in epithelial cells and cardiomyocytes as they respond to controlled stretching of their surface.
This position is tailored to nurture emerging researchers and provides the opportunity for the successful candidate to pursue a doctoral degree.
QualificationsIdeal candidates should possess a Master's degree in Physics, Biology, or Chemistry (or an equivalent qualification) and have experience in the biophysics of cellular mechanics utilizing biological model systems. Expertise in cellular biophysics, advanced light microscopy, and atomic force microscopy/colloidal probe microscopy is highly desirable. The applicant should demonstrate curiosity, strong motivation, self-organization, and a genuine interest in collaborating within an interdisciplinary team to conduct cutting-edge research.
