Ph.D. Research Assistant
This role is designed for an individual to engage in cutting-edge research within the realm of biophysics, focusing on the mechanical properties of cells. The successful candidate will work on a part-time basis, with a contract duration of three years, and will receive a salary in accordance with pay grade 13 TV-L.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe viscoelastic characteristics of cellular structures are crucial for various biological activities, including adhesion, growth, and migration. This research aims to differentiate between the passive and active mechanical properties of the cellular cortex. The project will explore the hypothesis that cellular responses to external forces occur on varying time scales, involving mechanisms such as:
- Passive recruitment of excess surface area
- Poroelastic relaxation of the cytosol
- Active contraction of the cortex
The selected candidate will be responsible for integrating a micropipette aspiration system with an atomic force microscope (AFM) that is paired with a spinning disk fluorescence microscope. This innovative setup will facilitate the investigation of how the plasma membrane and actin cortex interact during controlled stretching of cellular surfaces.
Candidate ProfileIdeal applicants should possess a Master's degree in Physics, Biology, or Chemistry (or equivalent) and have experience in the biophysics of cell mechanics utilizing biological model systems. Familiarity with cellular biophysics, advanced light microscopy, and atomic force microscopy is highly desirable. The candidate should demonstrate curiosity, motivation, self-organization, and a strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration to conduct pioneering research.
