In collaboration with the Chair for Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, a leading institution in contract research and development in laser technology, offers a unique opportunity to undertake a thesis within the 'Laser Powder Bed Fusion' department, focusing on surface technology and shape ablation.
Cutting-edge laser techniques, such as selective laser-induced etching (SLE), are employed to fabricate high-precision glass components for various industries, including semiconductor manufacturing, medical technology, and quantum technology, achieving intricate dimensions of less than 1 μm. By utilizing ultra-short pulsed laser radiation with extremely high light intensities, we can trigger non-linear absorption mechanisms that facilitate the processing of transparent materials. Current research endeavors particularly emphasize crystalline materials like sapphire, known for their hardness and thermal conductivity, which are increasingly relevant in quantum technology applications. However, the fundamental absorption mechanisms of laser radiation in sapphire remain inadequately understood. Clarifying these research questions is a crucial initial step towards enabling the future production of three-dimensional sapphire components using SLE.
Responsibilities
- Acquire in-depth knowledge of 'Processing Transparent Materials with USP Laser Radiation'
- Independently design and execute experiments utilizing the SLE laser processing system
- Conduct transmission measurements using an integrating sphere
- Perform voltage measurements through polarization contrast microscopy
- Analyze, interpret, and present the experimental results
