Scientific Officer for Advanced Imaging

Your Role

We are looking for a dedicated expert in light microscopy to join our team at EMBL-EBI. The successful candidate will serve as a scientific officer within the Advanced Light Microscopy Facility (ALMF).

Your responsibilities will include instructing and assisting users in sophisticated light microscopy methods. This encompasses all facets of assay development, particularly in automated image acquisition, image data analysis, and extensive data management.

Additionally, you will be tasked with developing custom software solutions that enable users to perform large-scale experiments automatically. Collaboration with EMBL workshops and industrial partners may also involve the creation of bespoke hardware.

As part of your role, you will engage in the evaluation and implementation of state-of-the-art microscopy technology in partnership with our industrial collaborators. You will also play a key role in organizing and delivering international training courses on advanced microscopy techniques.

Contract Details:

  • Contract duration: 3 years (renewable)
  • Grading: Grade 5 or 6 based on qualifications and experience (monthly salary starting at €3,925 or €4,459 after tax, excluding pension & insurances) + benefits

Qualifications

You should possess:

  • A university degree in life sciences, physics, or engineering, ideally with a PhD.
  • Extensive experience in various advanced light microscopy techniques.
  • Hands-on knowledge in the automation of image acquisition, image analysis, and data management.
  • Strong teamwork abilities along with excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following areas is advantageous:

  • Biological sample preparation and its application to biological inquiries.
  • Prior experience in a scientific core facility.
  • Experience in organizing and teaching training courses.
  • Development of microscopy technologies.
  • Programming skills in languages such as LabView, Matlab, C++, Java, or Python.
