Position Overview
The significance of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) is on the rise, influenced by the evolving age demographics and diverse lifestyles of prospective parents. Recent advancements in our comprehension of fertility limitations have been propelled by cutting-edge optical imaging techniques, such as light sheet fluorescence microscopy, which allow for the visualization of intricate processes occurring in oocytes and early embryos within mammalian models at both molecular and cellular levels.
However, the transition of these scientific breakthroughs into clinical settings for enhanced understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of human infertility has been hindered by the absence of methodologies that can effectively bridge the gap between the detailed molecular insights provided by advanced fluorescence technologies and the physiological imaging required in clinical environments, which necessitates label-free techniques that do not disrupt the delicate biological processes at the onset of life.
Our initiative seeks to unify the various biological and medical scales by creating an innovative hybrid microscopy platform. This platform will leverage the molecular specificity inherent in fluorescence microscopy to fundamentally enhance the informational yield of label-free imaging methods. In collaboration with the EMBL Imaging Centre and the research team led by Robert Prevedel, alongside the University Hospital of Heidelberg, we will integrate high-resolution fluorescence light sheet microscopy with label-free optical coherence and Brillouin microscopies, which offer advanced insights into the morphological and mechanical characteristics of embryos.
This multimodal data will serve as a foundation for training artificial intelligence (AI) models capable of identifying molecular and cellular alterations from label-free images alone. Consequently, we aim to establish a high-resolution cross-scale imaging platform that could effectively bridge the divide between fundamental research and clinical practice, facilitating the visualization of previously obscured processes linked to infertility.
