- PhD position in "Processing and analysis of airborne snow thickness radar data" (d/f/m)

**Background**
Snow on sea ice is one of the most important properties for theobservation and interpretation of sea ice variability and change, as itsthickness affects the sea ice mass balance and is a critical parameter inaltimetric ice thickness retrievals. This project will process and utilizelarge snow thickness data sets acquired by AWI's research aircraft in the Arctic and Antarctic. Measurements have been carried out with an ultra-wideband (UWB), frequency-modulated, continuous wave (FMCW) radar for which establishedprocessing chains exist. These processing chains shall be extended, improved,and applied to existing and forthcoming data to be obtained by the applicant. In addition, the project will contribute to the European Space Agency's (ESA)St3TART project, which focuses on the validation of Sentinel-3 radar altimetryice thickness data, and for which coincident data from other Sentinel-3sensors, in particular imaging radiometers, shall be used. The applicant is expected to strongly contribute to the project and to closely collaborate with our international project partners.

**Your Tasks**
- Extensive data processing and publication
- Preparation and performance of airborne field campaigns
- Compilation of peer-reviewed publications about results
- Validation of Sentinel-3 sea ice retrievals with the airborne data
- Participation and contribution to conferences, project meetings, and project reports.

**Your Profile**
- MSc in Geophysics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, Climate Sciences, or related fields
- Good background in performance and quantitative analysis of field measurements
- Good understanding of time series analysis and Fourier Transforms
- Experience with large geophysical data sets
- Good programming skills
- Good communication skills, particularly in the English language.

This position is limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level **13 (66%)**. The place of employment will be **Bremerhaven**.
