Bremerhaven, Deutschland Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung Vollzeit

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
- Senior Scientist in Physical Oceanography (M/F/d)

**Background**

**Tasks**
You are expected to conduct and coordinate research targeting ocean-glacier interaction around Greenland. In particular, building on existing modeling infrastructures at AWI, you are expected to develop model simulations that seamlessly connect the circulation from the open ocean across the continental shelf circulation and into the fjords up to the calving front. You are expected to realistically implement important phenomena/processes such as subglacial discharge, tides, icebergs, tidewater calving front, etc. Equipped with this system, you should address the interaction between the ocean and ice sheets on a Greenland-wide scale. At AWI, we expect you to interact on this topic with colleagues from the fields of glaciology, paleoclimate and fjord biology. We expect you to represent AWI’s ocean-glacier interaction work in national and international frameworks.

**Requirements**:

- You should hold a PhD degree in physical oceanography, climate physics, or related fields.
- A strong background in studying oceanographic processes relevant for warm water circulation and ocean-icesheet interaction in polar oceans is required and should be documented by publications in the scientific literature.
- A strong background in multiscale numerical ocean modeling is essential.
- A strong interest in interpreting observational data by means of model simulations should be demonstrated.
- Experience in oceanographic data acquisition in polar oceans is desirable.
- Strong programming skills in data analysis and visualization are mandatory.
- You need to document a strong publication record including first-authorships. High impact paper authorships are an asset.
- You should be internationally well connected in your current field of research.
- Finally, demonstrated experience in the education and training of next-generation oceanographers is desirable.
- Participation in expeditions is required.

**Further Information**

This is a part-time position (27,3h) limited to 3 years with the option to become a permanent employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level **14**. The place of employment will be B**remerhaven**.
