The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. - Scientific Programmer (M/F/d) in Climate System Modeling

**Background**

**Tasks**
In this role, you will:

- Modify the OpenIFS 48r1 GCM to read and integrate various CMIP7 forcing files.
- Conduct tuning simulations to ensure the AWI-CM3 MR model is accurately represented for CMIP7 purposes.
- Perform the CMIP7 DECK simulations using the AWI-CM3 MR.
- Standardize the resulting model outputs and ensure their proper upload to the ESGF node.
- Collaborate with top European climate modelers, computing scientists, and software engineers.

**Requirements**:

- A master’s degree in software engineering, data science, computer science, mathematics, physics, meteorology, oceanography, climate sciences, or related fields. A PhD is preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Fortran, C++ or another statically typed, compiled programming language.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Python, R, or another scripting language widely used for data analysis and processing.
- Fluency in English.
- Experience with version control systems like git, and familiarity with software testing and documentation practices.
- Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) systems, parallel data processing, and data formats such as netCDF, GRIB, and Zarr is highly advantageous.

**Further Information**

This is a full-time position, limited to 28months. It is also suitable for part-time employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level **13**. The place of employment will be **Bremerhaven**.**
