The Collaborative Research Center 1459 Intelligent Matter: From Responsive to Adaptive Nanosystems funded by the German Research Foundation and established at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill a position for a
Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter*innen, salary level E 13 TV-L, part-time)commencing on 1 March 2026. We are offering a fixed-term part-time position (75%), initially limited until 31 December 2028. The CRC 1459 and its integrated research training group offer an outstanding infrastructure and a comprehensive and interdisciplinary training program in the design and study of intelligent matter. The program will enable the researcher to carry out frontier research and empower them for future research and management tasks in industry and academia.
The researcher position forms part of an intensive and interdisciplinary research program on the conceptualization and realization of intelligent matter. Intelligence is the ability to perceive information and to retain it as knowledge to be applied towards adaptive behaviour in a changing environment. The CRC 1459 is inspired by the question whether synthetic matter can have intelligent properties. Such intelligent matter would provide entirely new opportunities for instance for the development of artificial skin, soft robotics with adaptive tactility, and brain-inspired computing with reduced energy consumption. Your tasks:- Experimental research in project C06 in the CRC 1459
- Collaboration with other research groups within the CRC 1459
- Outstanding Master's degree in physics.
- Extensive research experience in mode-division multiplexing (MDM), including prior demonstrations of OAM-based free-space MDM links and spatial-mode multiplexing systems.
- Proven ability to design inverse-designed meta-surface for mode conversion, multiplexing, and multimode couplers.
- Deep expertise in high-order-mode beam control and in modeling multimode light–matter interactions via transfer matrices for integrated nanophotonic systems.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing cascaded multimode waveguide crossings and couplers for on-chip matrix architectures, including accumulated loss and inter-modal distortion.
- Prior experience on integrating WDM-compatible MDM computing architectures, including conceptual development of computation-capacity scaling in optical tensor cores.
- In-depth knowledge in phase-change-material–multimode interactions, including simulation and design of multi-level memories.
- Hands-on experience designing and fabricating multi-mode all-optical memories, including multi-mode read/write/erase schemes and single-cell access via mode demultiplexing.
- Strong record of implementing high-speed MDM optical systems and structured-beam generation (e.g., frequency-comb-based spatiotemporal beams) enabling ultrafast multimode neural-network operations
