New medicines for treating tuberculosis are urgently needed, particularly in developing countries. The spread of antibiotic-resistant M. tuberculosis (Mtb) strains results in a critical shortage of effective medications for treatment. In order to counteract this trend, Evotec collaborates with the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig and its Saarbrücken-based branch, the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS). The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is funding this collaboration in which Evotec is participating as a partner of HIPS. Evotec is contributing additional investment to establish novel technologies for identifying novel chemical scaffolds with Mtb activity.
Research Associate (f/m/d) - Evotec GmbH, located at Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland Saarbrücken
Full-time and non-permanent (24 Month)
Discovery of Antibiotics with Mtb activity
Your key responsibilities
- Discovery of novel natural products with activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis using s high throughput droplet microfluidics screen
- Generation of new M. tuberculosis screening strains in collaboration with our TB team in Lyon
- Fermentation and purification of natural products
- Work collaboratively with colleagues at Evotec sites from Lyon as well as with our HIPS/Evotec team in Saarbrücken
- Meet high standards for quality and turn-around time of bacteriological tests
- Deliver accurate and timely data to profile novel compounds
- Plan, analyze, and record experiments and present data at project meetings
Your qualifications
- A PhDs in pharmaceutical sciences, microbiology, molecular microbiology or bacteriology with a strong interest in natural products drug discovery
- Experience in in natural products discovery, in microbiology/bacteriology as well as in performing biochemical assays using multiple technologies
- Experience with molecular biology techniques is a plus
- Experience in working at high-throughput scales, including the setting up and running of automated workflows is a requirement
- Good written and spoken communication skills in English is required, German is a plus
- Highly self-motivated as the ability to work well in a cross-functional and cross-site teams
