Position Overview
The ifo Institute is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Researcher / Economist to contribute to our research initiatives at the ifo Center for Migration and Development Economics.
Research Focus
Our team, under the leadership of Prof. Panu Poutvaara, investigates the intricate dynamics of migration and the integration of immigrants. A significant aspect of our research is to understand how migration can yield benefits for migrants, host nations, and their countries of origin.
Key Research Areas
The primary challenges we address include:
- Promoting successful integration of migrants.
- Exploring development economics, particularly remittances and the role of migrants in connecting their home and host countries.
Currently, our research emphasizes the return plans and integration outcomes of Ukrainian refugees across various European nations, utilizing ongoing surveys conducted in Germany and other European locations.
Your Responsibilities
As a member of our team, you will engage in:
- Conducting high-quality research in migration economics and integration or development economics.
- Managing and executing third-party funded projects.
- Providing mentorship to doctoral candidates.
- Publishing research findings in esteemed peer-reviewed journals.
- Communicating research outcomes to a broader audience.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A degree in economics, specializing in migration economics, labor economics, applied microeconomics, or a related discipline, with a PhD completed or nearing completion.
- A proven track record of relevant knowledge and experience demonstrated through publications in reputable journals or suitable working papers.
- Expertise in microeconometric methods and applied economics.
- Experience with big data and machine learning methods is advantageous.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken, enabling effective interaction within an international research network.
- Knowledge of the German language is a plus.
- A collaborative spirit and a willingness to take on responsibilities.

Employment Terms
We offer an initial three-year employment contract, with the possibility of extension, and a competitive salary aligned with TV-L E 13 or E 14, reflecting your publication record and contributions.
