In the realm of online travel solutions, the challenges of scalability, resilience, and geographical distribution are immense. Managing systems that support numerous airlines, websites, and hotel properties involves a level of complexity that is hard to fathom. For instance, during peak operational periods, our systems handle over 17,000 transactions every second, amounting to more than a billion transactions daily, all while maintaining an average response time of under 0.3 seconds.
The Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) department is dedicated to delivering a secure, self-service, and cost-efficient database platform utilizing Microsoft SQL Server, MariaDB, and Oracle technologies. This department oversees the entire lifecycle of these databases, from automation development to operational management, within a critical and highly available enterprise environment. To ensure optimal service delivery, the DBaaS team operates in a 24x7 'follow-the-sun' model, with team members located across various global hubs.
Summary of the Role
The Oracle / MariaDB Operations Manager plays a pivotal role in overseeing the deployment, maintenance, performance, integrity, and security of the Oracle and MariaDB database platforms. This position requires effective coordination among team members and collaboration with Software Reliability Engineers to ensure seamless operations. Additionally, the manager partners with Research & Development and Product Management teams to enhance database automation and tooling.
The Operations Manager is responsible for the performance and outcomes of a sizable team, influencing resource allocation, budget management, and policy planning while establishing clear development plans for team members. This role involves complex decision-making and requires a high degree of autonomy, guided by senior management directives, with the ability to escalate issues as necessary.
Major Responsibilities & Expectations
- Ensure the stability, operability, and compliance of the Oracle / MariaDB database platform, including incident resolution and on-call management in a 24x7 operational environment.
- Plan and execute the deployment of database clusters tailored to customer needs, focusing on high availability and fault tolerance.
- Oversee daily operations within the area of expertise, driving comprehensive people management activities and team coordination, while aligning with DBaaS strategy and operational goals.
- Collaborate closely with DBaaS operations, development, and product management teams to foster continuous improvement in database automation and tooling.
- Accountable for the operational performance of a large team, ensuring alignment with departmental and company objectives, while driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead, motivate, and develop team members, fostering a culture of engagement and providing guidance and expertise.
- Actively contribute to the strategic direction of the DBaaS department.
- Demonstrate a high level of autonomy in decision-making, escalating issues when necessary.
- Facilitate effective communication within the DBaaS department and with external peers.
Relevant Job Experiences
- 8+ years of experience managing software operations in a critical, highly available enterprise environment.
- 5+ years in a leadership or people management role.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Certification in relational databases and/or programming is advantageous.
Skills and Knowledge
- Extensive experience in people and stream management.
- Field experience in supporting critical production workloads.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Proactive approach to identifying and mitigating potential issues.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other leaders and management counterparts.
- Experience working in multinational and multicultural environments.
- Proficiency with Oracle database technologies (19c, 23ai) in a Linux setting.
- Experience with MySQL / MariaDB (10.x+) is a plus.
- Familiarity with database automation tools (Ansible, Python, shell, etc.) is advantageous.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure and/or relevant certification is a plus.
Languages
- Fluency in English is required, both written and verbal.
